Welcome to New Cannan
To help you understand New Canaan “at a glance” we could tell you how our schools are consistently ranked #1 in Connecticut. We could tell you we are a population of about 20,000 living one quick hour from NYC. We could show you photos of our charming village with twinkling holiday lights and a magical dusting of snow. We could tell you how our sports teams continually win state championships and our High School programs are some of the best in the country. But here is the real skinny... what you really want to know about us, and why we feel so fortunate to live here. It’s the people. Something you can’t see when you find that perfect house you’ve been looking for. Something you can’t quantify in your purchase price. And yet, this intangible asset is what really makes New Canaanites most thankful. It is that bond that brings us all together to make sure that the lost dog gets found, that our seniors get to the doctor, that dinners anonymously arrive for those in need, and that everyone shows up to cheer for your kid as much as their own.
Our need to connect with each other has made our Newcomer’s Club the largest in the country, where families make life-long friends through playgroups and socials. On any given weekday at 3:15 pm, you will find a mountain of backpacks in front of the candy store that middle schoolers have safely ditched on their walk to town. On a cold February morning, you will see 150 high schoolers pile into buses to spend Winter Break rebuilding homes in less fortunate areas. On Elm Street, you will see us eating al fresco at our Manhattan-quality restaurants and walking over to our local playhouse afterward. You’ll see little Ballerinas perfecting their Nutcracker auditions on Forest Street, soccer players practicing at Waveny Park, volunteers helping our local philanthropies thrive, picnickers marveling at Philip Johnson’s inter-nationally renowned Glass House, and Santa Claus arriving by helicopter to Mead Park to kick off our holiday season. So go ahead, google our stats, and discover our strong average sales prices and some of the highest SAT scores in the country. But if you really want to understand what makes New Canaan tick, glance up from your phone and get connected to the people who make up our most valuable town asset.
